Cefalù is a seaside town on the Tyrrhenian coast, about 70 km east of Palermo, with a Norman cathedral, a medieval centre and a sandy beach. The route follows the A20 motorway toward Messina and the Cefalù exit, with tunnels along the coast. The historic centre around Corso Ruggero is a ZTL, mostly pedestrian, and cars stop at the car parks at the edge. The railway station is close to the old town, a few minutes on foot, and summer weekends bring heavy traffic.
Cefalù is a small town between a rocky headland and the sea. The Norman cathedral, begun in 1131, stands on the square in the middle of the old town, and the medieval wash house, the Lavatoio, is fed by a river spring in the lanes. The headland, La Rocca, can be climbed on a path to the ruins of the Temple of Diana. The town beach lies next to the old harbour. Summer weekends are crowded and the beach is busy, while winter is quiet.
Public transport instead: Trenitalia train Regionale from Palermo Centrale (after Trinacria Express from the airport) to Cefalù — about 45–60 min, about hourly, 1 change.
