Lefkada town is the capital of the island of Lefkada, which is joined to the mainland by a causeway and a short floating bridge, so it can be reached by road without a ferry. From the airport the route heads south-west past the lagoons and salt flats of Aktio, then crosses the canal by the bridge next to the Santa Maura fortress. The municipality gives the airport's distance from town as 18 km. The bridge opens on the hour for passing boats, which briefly stops road traffic, and summer queues at the crossing are common.
The centre of Lefkada town is compact: a pedestrian main street runs through it to the square of Agios Spyridon, lined with shops and the town's distinctive houses with upper floors of timber and metal, built that way because of earthquakes. Cars cannot enter these streets and stop on the roads around the edge of the old town or along the seafront. The marina lies on the eastern side, the lagoon and the Gyra road wrap around the north, and the sandy beach of Agios Ioannis is on the western edge of town. Most hotels are in town or a short drive away.
