Preveza sits on the northern side of the narrow strait that links the Ambracian Gulf with the Ionian Sea, while the airport lies on the southern side near Aktio. The two shores are joined by the Aktio - Preveza undersea tunnel, which carries the road beneath the strait and has a toll. Once through the tunnel, the road enters the southern edge of town, so the whole trip is only around 7 km. Traffic is light for most of the year; in July and August the waterfront streets of Preveza fill up in the evenings.
The heart of Preveza is its long waterfront facing the strait, lined with cafes and moored yachts, with the old town of narrow lanes and small squares directly behind it; several of these lanes are pedestrian-only, so cars stop on the surrounding streets. The clock tower of Agios Charalambos rises above the old town, the Archaeological Museum of Nicopolis stands near the seafront and the Pantokrator Castle guards the harbour. The ruins of ancient Nicopolis lie a few kilometres north, and the Ionian beaches such as Monolithi start on the coast road beyond them.
