The Geysir geothermal area is in the Haukadalur valley in south Iceland, roughly 155 km from Keflavík Airport, and forms the middle stop of the Golden Circle. The most direct route takes Route 41 towards Reykjavík, then Route 1, Suðurlandsvegur, east over the Hellisheiði plateau past Hveragerði, and Route 35, Biskupstungnabraut, north through farmland to Haukadalur. An alternative leads via Þingvellir and the Lyngdalsheiði road past Laugarvatn. Hellisheiði is high and exposed, and in winter it can be closed for a time in heavy snow.
The hot-spring field lies directly beside Route 35, opposite the Geysir Center with its car park, hotel and restaurants. Strokkur, the active geyser, erupts every few minutes, while the Great Geysir itself, which gave its name to all geysers, is now mostly dormant. Paths between the pools are marked off by ropes because of the boiling water. Gullfoss waterfall is about 10 km further along the same road, and Fontana baths at Laugarvatn and the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir are within a short drive.
Public transport: There is no direct public transport from Keflavík Airport to the Geysir geothermal area in Haukadalur.
