Ireo (also spelled Ireon or Heraion) is a coastal village on the south coast, a few kilometres west of the airport. The road runs west from the terminal across the flat coastal plain past olive groves and fields, and the trip usually takes about 10 minutes. The village takes its name from the ancient sanctuary of Hera, whose remains lie at its edge and form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pythagoreion and Heraion. The area is flat and quiet, with little traffic outside the peak summer weeks.
The village spreads along a pebble beach with a seafront path lined by tavernas and small hotels, and a fishing harbour at one end. The archaeological site of the Heraion, with the single standing column of the great Temple of Hera, is a short walk from the village centre along the Sacred Way area. Further west along the coast there are smaller coves reached by local roads. Accommodation is mostly low-rise and close to the shore, and cars can reach most entrances from the road behind the beach.
