Samos Town, also known as Vathy, is the capital and main ferry port of the island, set at the head of a deep bay on the north-east coast. The airport lies on the south coast next to Pythagorio, so the route crosses the eastern part of the island, about 15 km in total, normally a 20 to 25 minute drive. The road leaves the coastal plain, climbs over the hills and drops down towards the bay. The airport's own information says public buses link it with the town either via Pythagoreio or via Mytilinioi.
The town stretches along the waterfront of Vathy bay, with the ferry quay towards the northern end and a long seafront promenade of cafes and shops. Pythagoras Square, with its lion statue, sits in the middle of the waterfront, and the Archaeological Museum of Samos, known for its large kouros statue, is a short walk inland near the municipal gardens. Above the modern town, the old quarter of Ano Vathy climbs the hillside in narrow lanes that are best explored on foot. Most hotels are along or just behind the seafront road, where cars can stop.
