Koukounaries lies near the south-western end of Skiathos, about 15 km from the airport. The route passes through Skiathos Town and then follows the single coastal road west along the south coast, past a string of bays and hotels, which takes around 25 to 35 minutes. The road is narrow in places and shared with buses, scooters and quad bikes, so in July and August it moves slowly, particularly in the late morning and late afternoon.
Koukounaries beach is a long curve of fine sand backed by a stone pine forest, and behind the trees lies the Strofilia lagoon, a protected wetland. Hotels and apartments are set among the pines and along the road above the beach, mostly with car access to the entrance. The bus line ends nearby, and from the bus terminus a short walk leads to Banana beach on the next headland to the west. Agia Eleni bay is a little further along the same road. Most of the area is open for the summer season.
