Megali Ammos is the beach district on the western edge of Skiathos Town, where the houses of the town spread down to a wide, shallow bay. From the airport it is only about 4 km, so the drive usually takes well under ten minutes. The road runs past the end of the runway, crosses the town and then continues a short way west on the main south-coast road. On summer days when ferries arrive, the stretch through town can be slow, as the harbour front fills with arriving passengers and cars.
The beach curves along the bay below a hillside covered with hotels, apartments and studios, many reached by short, steep side streets that leave the coast road. Tavernas and beach bars sit directly on the sand, and the water stays shallow for some distance from the shore. The small Ftelia beach lies next to it, and the bays of Vasilias and Achladies follow further west. The old port and Papadiamanti street can be reached on foot in around 15 to 20 minutes. Bus stop 4, called Akropolis, has one of the operator's ticket kiosks.
