Skiathos Town is the only town on the island, built on two low hills above the harbour on the south-east coast. The airport runway lies just to the north-east, so the drive is only 2 to 3 km and usually takes about five minutes, following the road around the head of the bay towards the new port. In summer the waterfront road is busy when ferries and hydrofoils from Volos and Agios Konstantinos arrive, and parking in the town centre is very limited.
The town has two harbours divided by the pine-covered Bourtzi peninsula: the old port with fishing boats and excursion caiques, and the new port where ferries dock. The main street, Papadiamanti, climbs from the waterfront past shops and the house of the writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, now a museum. The old lanes on the hill around the church of Trion Ierarchon are narrow and stepped, so cars stop on the harbour road or the ring road above. Hotels are both in town and along the coast road heading west.
