Private transfer, Sofia Airport (SOF) to Plovdiv: the car (1–3 passengers) is €110 and the van (4–8) is €160, a set price for the vehicle that does not change at checkout. Expect 142 km on the road via A 1 and 1; about 1h 35min off-peak, 1h 35min – 2h in rush hour.
Pickup: The driver waits in the arrivals hall of the terminal your flight lands at (Terminal 1 or Terminal 2), after baggage reclaim and the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. The booking includes flight monitoring and an hour of free waiting from touchdown; your bags are loaded for you.
Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-largest city, lies on the Maritsa river in the Upper Thracian Plain, about 145 km south-east of the airport. Because the airport sits on the eastern side of Sofia, the route reaches the Trakia motorway quickly and then follows it east past Vakarel, Ihtiman and Pazardzhik for most of the trip. The motorway requires an electronic vignette. Traffic is usually steady, with heavier flows on Friday and Sunday evenings.
Plovdiv is built around a cluster of hills. The Old Town on the central hills holds the Roman theatre, revival-era merchant houses and museums along cobbled lanes, and the long pedestrian main street runs below it past the Roman stadium towards the Kapana quarter of small streets with cafés and galleries. Much of the centre is pedestrian and the Old Town lanes have restricted access, so cars stop at the nearest open street; hotels outside the pedestrian core can usually be reached directly. The main railway station and bus stations lie south of the centre.
Public transport instead: Metropolitan Sofia + BDZ Passenger Services metro + train M4 to Iskarsko Shose, then BDZ train Sofia - Plovdiv from Sofia Airport metro station (Terminal 2) to Plovdiv, 1 change. No direct public transport from the airport to Plovdiv. Sofia Airport points travellers to metro line M4: at Iskarsko Shose, the second stop after the airport, there is a connection with BDZ trains on the Sofia - Plovdiv line.
