Getting from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) to Zaanse Schans takes about 25 min by car on an empty road (25–35 min in heavy traffic) over 28 km via A10 and A4. Our private transfer costs €65 for a car with 1–3 passengers or €90 for a van with 4–8 — the vehicle price you see is the price you pay at booking.
On arrival: The driver waits in the arrivals hall of Schiphol's single terminal building, just beyond the baggage reclaim and customs exit (the Schiphol Plaza side), holding a sign with your name. If the flight is late, the driver adjusts to the real landing time; 60 minutes of waiting are included and help with the luggage is part of the service.
Zaanse Schans is an open-air neighbourhood of working windmills, wooden houses and small museums on the bank of the River Zaan, about 25 km north-west of Schiphol. The route runs from the airport onto the A4, joins the A10 ring and passes through the Coentunnel before continuing north on the A8 towards Zaandam. The A10 and the A8 are among the busiest motorways of the Randstad in the morning and evening rush. The site has its own access road and parking at the edge, and the last stretch to the windmills is a short walk; the area is protected, so cars cannot enter the village lanes.
The windmills of Zaanse Schans stand in a row along the Zaan, and several of them work as an oil mill, a dye mill and a sawmill, so the village shows how the Zaan region once made its living. Behind them are the Zaans Museum, a cheese farm and a bakery museum, and the Verkade pavilion is devoted to the local biscuit factory. The wooden green houses are lived in and are not museums, so visitors keep to the paths. Spring and summer fill the site from late morning, while winter evenings are dark and quiet.
Public transport instead: NS train Sprinter from Amsterdam Sloterdijk (change from Schiphol train) to Koog aan de Zaan / Koog-Zaandijk — about 40–55 min, several per hour, 1 change. No direct public transport from the airport; train via Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Koog aan de Zaan, then walk about 15 minutes.
