The quickest road is the A4 Serenissima toll motorway from Sommacampagna to the Peschiera del Garda exit, followed by a short stretch of the SR249 into town; the alternative without tolls runs through Castelnuovo del Garda. The old town lies on an island ringed by the Venetian fortress walls and canals, with limited vehicle access, so the driver stops at the nearest gate or square open to traffic.
The fortress of Peschiera, part of the UNESCO Venetian Works of Defence, encloses the small old town with Piazza Ferdinando di Savoia, the canal harbour and the church of San Martino.
