Laganas is the largest beach resort of Zakynthos, on the south coast, about 6 km from the airport and a drive of 10 to 15 minutes. The route goes along the airport road and across the plain towards the bay. The resort is crowded in July and August, and its main street is a busy strip of bars. Laganas Bay is a protected marine area for loggerhead turtles, which nest on the beaches there.
Laganas has a long sandy beach, with the National Marine Park of Zakynthos protecting the turtle nesting area at the east end, with restrictions on the beach at night. The village centre is a long strip of tavernas, bars and shops. Hotels are along the seafront and the streets behind it, and boats to Marathonisi (Turtle Island) leave from the harbour. The car can drop passengers on the main street. The nightlife is concentrated in summer, and the resort is quiet from November to April.
