By train: FEX and RE20

The station Flughafen BER is directly under Terminal 1, on level U2. If you land at Terminal 2, walk across to Terminal 1. The FEX airport express runs around the clock, every 15 minutes from about 04:00 to 01:00, to Südkreuz (about 14 min), Potsdamer Platz (about 19 min) and Berlin Hauptbahnhof (about 23 min). The RE20 runs hourly on the same route from about 04:00 to 21:00. Until December 2026 the two lines together give four trains an hour.

By S-Bahn: S9 and S85

The S9 runs every 20 minutes from the airport through Schöneweide, Treptower Park, Warschauer Straße, Ostbahnhof, Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstraße, the Hauptbahnhof and Zoologischer Garten towards Spandau. The VBB gives about 40 minutes to Alexanderplatz and about 45 minutes to Charlottenburg. The S85 also runs every 20 minutes, via Schöneweide and Ostkreuz.

Tickets

BER is in fare zone C, so a trip into the city needs a Berlin ABC ticket. Under the VBB fares in force since 1 January 2026, a single ABC ticket costs €5.00 (reduced €3.50) and is valid for 120 minutes with changes; a 24-hour ABC ticket costs €12.90. Buy tickets at the machines in the terminals and at the station, or in the VBB, BVG or S-Bahn apps. Paper tickets from a machine must be validated before you travel.

By car or taxi

The road route is about 27 km on the A113 and the A100 city motorway, about 37 minutes without traffic. Roadworks on the A100 and the evening rush hour slow the approach. The area inside the S-Bahn ring is a low-emission zone. Taxis wait outside Terminal 1 and charge by the meter.

Where you meet the driver

Berlin Brandenburg Airport has Terminal 1, the main terminal with the railway station underneath, and Terminal 2 next to it; which one you use depends on the airline. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of the terminal your flight uses, after baggage reclaim and the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. We track your flight and you get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing.

What to choose

Most travellers: the FEX for €5.00 is quick, frequent and runs all night. Staying near Alexanderplatz or in Friedrichshain: the S9 avoids a change. A family with small children and suitcases, a group of four to eight sharing one van, or a hotel far from the FEX and S9 stations, for example in the west around Kurfürstendamm: a car to the door at one price per vehicle saves changes with luggage.

Good to know

  • Buy an ABC ticket: an AB ticket does not cover the airport, which is in zone C.
  • Validate a paper ticket from a machine before boarding.
  • The FEX stops at Südkreuz and Potsdamer Platz before the Hauptbahnhof, so check which stop is nearest to your hotel.
  • Central Berlin covers several districts 5 to 10 km apart; check your hotel's exact address before choosing a line.
