By S-Bahn: S1 and S8

The airport S-Bahn station lies between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The S8 runs via the east of the city (Ostbahnhof) and the S1 via the west (Moosach). Both reach the Hauptbahnhof in about 40 minutes, and the S8 also serves Marienplatz on the way. Because they alternate, there is a train into the city every 10 minutes. The S1 runs every 20 minutes during the day. The S8 runs every 20 minutes and around the clock, every 40 minutes between about 01:00 and 04:00.

Tickets and prices

The airport is in MVV zone 5, so the trip to the centre covers zones M–5. Under the MVV fares in force from 1 January 2026, a single ticket costs €15.10. A single day ticket for M–5 costs €17.50, and the group day ticket for 2–5 people €32.60. The Airport-City-Day-Ticket, from €17.50, is valid on all MVV services between the airport and the city area until 6 am the next day, for 1 adult and up to three children or as a group ticket for 2–5 people. Children aged 6–14 pay €2.00 for a single trip. Buy tickets at the machines, in the MVV app or at the ticket shop. The Deutschland-Ticket is also valid on the S-Bahn.

By bus

The Lufthansa Express Bus runs nonstop every 20 minutes from Terminal 2 (bus stop 1) and Terminal 1 to Munich North (Schwabing), about 25 minutes, and the Hauptbahnhof, about 45 minutes. You do not need to fly with Lufthansa to use it. It has its own fares, separate from MVV tickets.

By car or taxi

The road route is about 41 km on the A92 and A9 motorways and takes about 44 minutes without traffic, longer at rush hour, when the A9 into the city is often congested. The area inside the Mittlerer Ring is a low-emission zone. The old town between Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Marienplatz is pedestrian, so a car stops at the nearest open street. Taxis wait outside both terminals and charge by the meter.

Where you meet the driver

Munich Airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 with its satellite. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of the terminal your flight lands at, after baggage reclaim and the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. We track your flight and you get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing.

What to choose

Alone or as a couple: the S-Bahn is quick, frequent and much cheaper than a car. If you will ride trams or the U-Bahn later that day, the Airport-City-Day-Ticket from €17.50 is better value than a single. A small group of up to five with light bags: look at the group day ticket. Families with children and suitcases, groups of six to eight, or a hotel well away from an S-Bahn station: a car or van at one price per vehicle takes you to the door.

Good to know

  • Buy a ticket for zones M–5: a ticket for zone M alone is not valid from the airport.
  • Day tickets bought for the airport trip are valid until 6 am the next day.
  • The S8 runs all night, so late arrivals still have a train into the city.
  • The Lufthansa Express Bus is open to all passengers, whatever airline you fly.
