Barry Island is the nearest seaside resort to the airport, only a few kilometres to the east along the coast. The route follows the A4226 into Barry, passes the docks and crosses the causeway that has linked the former island to the mainland since the 19th century. On sunny summer weekends and school holidays the access road and the seafront car parks fill up, and traffic on the causeway is slower than usual.
The main beach is Whitmore Bay, a wide sandy bay backed by a promenade with cafes, the restored pavilions and a seasonal pleasure park. To the west, the smaller Jackson's Bay and the headland of Nell's Point offer quieter walks and views across the Bristol Channel. The Barry Island station of the branch line is close to the seafront. Barry town itself, with its shops and the larger hotels, lies on the mainland side of the docks.
Public transport instead: Adventure Travel bus 905 (airport shuttle) from Cardiff Airport terminal to Rhoose (Cardiff International Airport) station. Transport for Wales train Vale of Glamorgan line (towards Cardiff) from Rhoose (Cardiff International Airport) station to Barry, 1 change. Transport for Wales train Barry Island branch (Barry - Barry Island) from Rhoose (Cardiff International Airport) station to Barry Island, 2 changes. No direct public transport from Cardiff Airport to Barry Island: 905 shuttle bus to Rhoose station, train to Barry, then the branch train to Barry Island.
