Houmt Souk is the main town of Djerba and the seat of its largest markets, on the north coast of the island. The airport lies at Mellita in the north-west, and the trip is a short run east along regional road RR 109, about 9 to 10 km, entering town past the new districts before the old centre. The road is flat and straight, with roundabouts on the edge of town. Traffic builds up around the market streets in the morning and on busy summer days.
The old centre is a compact grid of whitewashed lanes around Place Hedi Chaker, with covered souks and old caravanserai (funduks) now used as guesthouses. Some of the narrowest market lanes are best reached on foot, so a car stops at the nearest street. The fishing harbour and the Borj El Kebir fortress (Borj Ghazi Mustapha) are a short walk north on the seafront. The bus station is on Avenue Habib Bourguiba, close to the centre.
Public transport instead: Regional bus (listed by the airport operator OACA) bus Airport - Houmt Souk from Djerba-Zarzis Airport to Houmt Souk, TND 1.00 single ticket, 5 departures a day from the airport: 07:30, 08:30, 12:40, 17:40 and 18:40.
