Chamonix lies in France at the foot of Mont Blanc, about 85 km south-east of the airport. The route crosses Geneva on the A1 and enters France, then follows the A40 motorway, known as the Autoroute Blanche, up the Arve valley past Cluses and Sallanches. The last section is the N205, which climbs on viaducts towards Les Houches and Chamonix. The A40 is a toll motorway, and the Swiss motorway section needs a vignette. On winter Saturdays, when ski resort weeks change over, the A40 and the valley road are often congested.
The town centre of Chamonix is a small pedestrian area around Place Balmat and Rue du Docteur Paccard, along the Arve river, with the Aiguille du Midi cable car on its southern edge and the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace next to the railway station. Hotels and chalets spread along the valley towards Les Praz, Argentière and Les Houches. Cars can reach most hotels directly, but not the pedestrian streets of the centre. Winter brings skiers to Brévent, Flégère and Grands Montets, and summer brings hikers and climbers.
Public transport instead: SAT Mont-Blanc coach Geneva Airport - Chamonix from Geneva Airport coach station (Arrivals level) to Chamonix, daily. Léman Express + SNCF Mont-Blanc Express train Léman Express to Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet, then Mont-Blanc Express from Genève-Aéroport (via Genève-Cornavin) to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc station, 2 changes.
