Genoa Airport is built on reclaimed land in Sestri Ponente, on the western edge of the city, so the drive to the centre runs east along the coast past the container port and the Lanterna lighthouse. The usual route follows the waterfront roads and the Strada Sopraelevata Aldo Moro, the elevated road above the old harbour, which drops down near Porto Antico and Piazza Caricamento. Much of the medieval centre, the maze of narrow lanes known as caruggi, is a limited traffic zone (ZTL), so drop-offs are made at the nearest point a car is allowed.
Central Genoa stretches between two railway stations: Piazza Principe in the west, next to the ferry and cruise terminal, and Brignole in the east.
