Portofino is a small fishing village at the tip of the Portofino promontory, a protected regional park east of Genoa. From the airport the route crosses the city on the A10 and A12 toll motorways to the Rapallo exit, then follows the coastal road through Santa Margherita Ligure and the cove of Paraggi. This last stretch is narrow and winding, and in summer and at weekends traffic towards Portofino can queue for a long time. Private cars cannot drive into the village centre; they stop at the car park at its entrance.
From the car park at the edge of the village a short walk downhill leads to the Piazzetta, the small square on the harbour lined with painted houses. Paths climb from the harbour to the Church of San Giorgio and Castello Brown, and continue to the lighthouse at Punta Portofino. Hotels are scattered on the slopes around the bay, some reached only on foot. Walking trails of the regional park lead to San Fruttuoso, which is otherwise reached by boat, and boats also link the harbour with Santa Margherita and Camogli.
Public transport instead: AMT Genova bus Volabus from Genoa Airport, Arrivals stop to Via Milano / Ferry Terminal, Genova Piazza Principe, Via XX Settembre / Piazza De Ferrari, Genova Brignole — about 30 min, €10.00 single ticket, daily. Trenitalia (Regionale Liguria) train Genova - La Spezia regional from Genova Brignole to Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino, 1 change. AMT Genova bus 782 from Santa Margherita Ligure FS (railway station) to Portofino, daily, 2 changes. No direct public transport from Genoa Airport to Portofino: Volabus to Genova Brignole, regional train to Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino, then AMT bus 782.
