Elounda is a resort village in the north-east of Crete, about 85 km from the airport. The route follows the VOAK national road east to Agios Nikolaos and then continues on the coast road north to Elounda, in around 1 hour 15 minutes. The final stretch is two-lane and winds along the Gulf of Mirabello. Traffic is heavy on the coast road in high season, and hotels are spread over several kilometres.
Elounda has a small harbour and square with tavernas, while most hotels lie along the bays to the north and south. The Spinalonga lagoon is a short boat ride from the harbour or from Plaka. The causeway at Poros and the old salt pans lie on the narrow isthmus leading to the Spinalonga peninsula. The village centre is flat and compact, and cars can stop near the main square. Agios Nikolaos is about 10 km south.
Public transport: No direct public bus from the airport; the usual route is bus 78 to Heraklion bus station, a KTEL coach to Agios Nikolaos and a local bus to Elounda.
