Piran is on the Slovenian coast, at the tip of a peninsula on the Adriatic, about 144 km by road from the airport. The route passes Ljubljana and follows the A1 motorway across the Karst towards Koper, then the coastal expressway past Izola and Portorož to Piran. Motorways and expressways in Slovenia require an electronic vignette. The approach along the coast can be slow in July and August, when the beach towns are at their busiest.
Piran's old town of narrow lanes and Venetian-style houses is centred on Tartini Square, with St. George's Church and its bell tower on the hill above the sea and the town walls on the ridge behind. The historic centre is largely closed to general traffic, and visitors' cars use the car parks at the edge of town, from where the centre is a short walk or local bus ride. Portorož, with its beaches, marina and hotels, adjoins Piran to the south-east.
