Luxembourg Airport lies at Findel on a plateau north-east of the capital, about 6 km in a straight line and roughly 9 km by road from Place d'Armes in the Old Town. The usual route runs west along the Route de Trèves and across the Kirchberg plateau, then over the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, the red bridge above the Pfaffenthal valley, into the upper town. Luxembourg motorways have no tolls or vignettes. Weekday rush hours, when many cross-border commuters arrive, are the main cause of slow traffic on the approach roads.
The historic upper town (Ville-Haute) sits on a rock plateau above the Alzette and Pétrusse valleys. Place d'Armes, Place Guillaume II with the town hall, the Grand Ducal Palace and the Notre-Dame Cathedral are a few minutes apart on foot, and many streets around them are pedestrian, so cars stop on the nearest street open to traffic. The Gare district with the central railway and bus station lies south of the Pétrusse valley, while the Grund and Clausen quarters are down by the river, below the Bock Casemates and the Chemin de la Corniche.
Public transport instead: Luxtram tram T1 from Findel - Luxembourg Airport to Hamilius / Gare Centrale, €0.00 single ticket, every 3 to 8 minutes (line capacity figure of the operator).
