Trier is a German city on the Moselle, just across the border from eastern Luxembourg and about 41 km by road from the airport. From Findel the route joins the A1 motorway, which runs east past Grevenmacher to the border at Wasserbillig, where it crosses the Sauer and continues as the German A64 down into the Moselle valley and Trier. There are no tolls for cars on either side. Fuel stations near Wasserbillig and commuter traffic towards Luxembourg in the morning can slow the border section.
Trier is one of the oldest cities in Germany. The Roman city gate Porta Nigra marks the northern edge of the old town, from where the pedestrian Simeonstrasse leads to the Hauptmarkt and on to Trier Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady. The Constantine Basilica, the Electoral Palace and the Imperial Baths lie a short walk further south. Cars cannot enter the pedestrian centre, so drop-offs are made on the ring roads around the old town or at the hotels just outside it; the main railway station is east of the Porta Nigra.
Public transport instead: Luxtram tram T1 from Findel - Luxembourg Airport to Hamilius / Gare Centrale, €0.00 single ticket, every 3 to 8 minutes (line capacity figure of the operator). CFL / DB Regio train regional trains Luxembourg - Wasserbillig - Trier from Luxembourg Gare Centrale to Trier Hauptbahnhof, 1 change. No direct public transport link from the airport to Trier on official sources: tram T1 to Luxembourg Gare Centrale, then a regional train to Trier Hauptbahnhof. The free fare in Luxembourg does not cover the German part of the trip.
