Imlil is a mountain village at about 1,740 m in the Ait Mizane valley of the High Atlas, the usual starting point for the ascent of Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa, inside Toubkal National Park. From the airport the route runs south on the national road RN7 through Tahannaout and Asni, where the valley narrows, and then follows the provincial road RP2030 uphill to Imlil. The last stretch is a winding mountain road with steep drops, so the drive takes longer than the distance suggests.
The road ends in the village centre, a short row of shops, small cafes and guesthouses beside the river. Many guesthouses and the hamlets of Aroumd and Tamatert lie higher up the slopes and are reached only by footpaths or mule tracks; luggage is usually carried up by mule from the end of the road. The trail to the Toubkal refuges starts here and passes the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. In winter snow can lie on the upper part of the road and on the passes, while spring and autumn are the main trekking seasons.
Public transport: No direct public transport from Marrakech airport to Imlil; the village is reached by road via Tahannaout and Asni.
