The medina is the walled old city of Marrakech, with the Jemaa el-Fna square, the souks and the Koutoubia Mosque at its heart. The airport lies only about 6 km south-west of the walls, so the drive is short: it follows Avenue Guemassa (regional road RR212) north-east past the Menara area and the Royal Palace district, then enters the medina by one of the gates near the Koutoubia. The route is about 7 km. Traffic around the gates and the square is slow in the evening, when the square fills with food stalls.
Inside the walls most lanes are too narrow for cars, and many riads can only be reached on foot. Drivers stop at the nearest accessible point, often at a gate such as Bab Agnaou, Bab Doukkala or Bab Ksiba, or on the streets around Jemaa el-Fna, and the last part is a short walk, sometimes with a local porter's handcart for luggage. The Koutoubia Mosque stands just west of the square, the Bahia Palace and the Mellah lie to the south-east, and the main souks spread north of Jemaa el-Fna towards the Ben Youssef Madrasa.
