Mahdia is a fishing town on a narrow peninsula, Cap Afrique, about 56 km south-east of the airport and once the capital of the Fatimid dynasty. The road skirts Monastir on its ring road and continues south on regional roads through the inland towns of the Monastir governorate before reaching the coast at Mahdia. The route has no tolls and passes through several town centres, where traffic slows during market days and rush hours.
The old town of Mahdia fills the tip of the peninsula and is entered through the Skifa Kahla, a fortified gate. Beyond it lie the Great Mosque, the Borj el Kebir fortress and the Fatimid harbour by the lighthouse. The fishing port is at the southern side of the peninsula. The hotel zone stretches north-west of the town along a long sandy beach, and most resort hotels have their own driveways. Inside the old town the streets are narrow and best explored on foot.
