Getaria is a small fishing town on a headland west of Zarautz, about 43 km from the airport. The drive follows the AP-8 and the GI-20 around San Sebastian, leaves the motorway at Zarautz and continues for the last few kilometres on the N-634, which runs right along the sea between the two towns. The AP-8 sections are tolled. Getaria is known as the birthplace of the navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano and of the couturier Cristobal Balenciaga, and for the txakoli white wine grown on the slopes around it.
The old town is a handful of steep, narrow lanes running down to the harbour, most of them closed to through traffic, so cars stop on the main road at the top. The Gothic church of San Salvador straddles a passage that leads to the port, where grill restaurants line the quay. Beyond the harbour rises the island of San Anton, known as the Raton de Getaria, linked by a breakwater. The Cristobal Balenciaga Museum stands on the hill above the town, and the small beaches of Gaztetape and Malkorbe lie on either side of the headland.
Public transport instead: Lurraldebus (Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa) bus BI01, then UK10 (Donostia – Zarautz – Getaria – Zumaia, via AP-8) from Aeropuerto de San Sebastián, bus stop A to Getaria, Aldamar parkea 4 (Herrigunea / town centre); change in Donostia at the bus station / Renfe Estación del Norte stop, BI01 about every 60 min; UK09, UK10 and UK11 (all via Getaria) together run several times an hour on weekdays (timetables October 2026), 1 change. There is no direct public transport from the airport to Getaria, and Getaria has no railway station. The shortest combination is Lurraldebus BI01 to the Donostia bus station, then Lurraldebus UK10, UK09 or UK11 from the stop by the Renfe Estacion del Norte to Getaria (Aldamar parkea).

The lanes of the old town are steep, narrow and largely closed to through traffic, so drop-offs are usually made on the main road above the old town, a short walk down to the port and the church of San Salvador.
