Bournemouth is a seaside town in Dorset, about 55 km south-west of the airport. The drive follows the M27 west past Southampton to its end at Cadnam, then the A31 across the New Forest to Ringwood and the A338 Wessex Way south into the town, a route without tolls. Free-roaming ponies and cattle use the forest roads, and the single A31 corridor through the New Forest becomes congested on summer weekends and bank holidays, when beach traffic also queues on the A338.
The town centre sits around the Square and the Lower Gardens, which run down the valley of the Bourne stream to Bournemouth Pier and the main beach. Hotels line the West Cliff and East Cliff above the sand, with Boscombe and its own pier a few kilometres to the east and Westbourne and the Poole boundary to the west. The seafront promenade and the Lower Gardens are closed to cars, but the clifftop roads and Bath Road near the pier allow drop-offs close to most hotels. The railway station lies about 1.5 km north-east of the Square.
Public transport instead: South Western Railway train from Southampton Airport Parkway to Bournemouth — about 36 min.
