Lucerne sits at the north-western end of Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland, about 65 km from Zurich Airport. The road skirts the west of Zurich on the A1 and A4 motorways, crosses the Knonauer Amt and passes Zug before joining the A14, which brings it into Lucerne from the north. The whole trip is on motorway, so the Swiss vignette applies. Traffic on the A4 and around the Zurich bypass is heaviest on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons.
The heart of Lucerne is the compact old town on the right bank of the Reuss, with painted houses around Weinmarkt and Kornmarkt, and the wooden Chapel Bridge with its water tower crossing the river near the railway station. The KKL concert hall and the lake steamer piers are next to the station, and the lakeside promenade leads past the grand hotels on Schweizerhofquai. Most of the old town is pedestrian, so drop-offs are made on the riverside streets or at hotel entrances that cars may reach.
Public transport instead: SBB train InterRegio / InterCity from Zürich Flughafen station (Airport Centre) to Luzern station.
