The Rhine Falls are on the Rhine between Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Laufen-Uhwiesen, just south-west of Schaffhausen and about 35 km north of Zurich Airport. Drivers either take the A4 motorway via Winterthur and the Cholfirst tunnel, the way the falls operator describes from Zurich, or main road 4 through Bülach and Eglisau, which crosses a short stretch of German territory near Jestetten. The motorway section needs the Swiss vignette. The area is busiest on summer weekends.
The falls can be visited from both banks. On the north side in Neuhausen, Schlössli Wörth sits at the foot of the falls with the landing stages for boats to the central rock, about 8 minutes on foot from Neuhausen Rheinfall station. On the south side, Schloss Laufen stands on the cliff above the falls, and a footpath leads down past the water to the Fischetz platform. The site is open all year round, and the old town of Schaffhausen with the Munot fortress is a few kilometres upstream.
