Copenhagen Airport (CPH) at Kastrup is only 9 km from the city centre, and both the metro and the train leave from beside Terminal 3. Either one gets you into the centre in about a quarter of an hour.
Short answer: take the metro M2 from the station beside Terminal 3: 13 minutes to Kongens Nytorv and 15 to Nørreport, every 4–6 minutes and around the clock. The metro station sits directly beside Terminal 3 and is served by line M2, which runs through Christianshavn to Kongens Nytorv (13 minutes) and Nørreport (15 minutes). Trains run every 4 to 6 minutes in the daytime and evening and every 15 to 20 minutes at night. The M2 does not stop at Copenhagen Central Station; for the station area change at Kongens Nytorv to M3 (City Circle Line) or take the train instead.
Trains to Copenhagen Central Station (København H) leave from the airport station under Terminal 3, tracks 1 and 2. The ride takes about 13 minutes, and some trains continue across Zealand. København H is next to Tivoli and the City Hall Square, with Vesterbro's hotels just behind it.
A 3-zone ticket costs DKK 30 and is valid for 1 hour 30 minutes on the metro, trains and buses; it covers the airport and the city centre. Youths aged 12–15 pay half, and an adult can take two children under 12 free. Buy it in the Rejsebillet app, at the ticket machines in the metro and train stations, or at the DSB ticket office in Terminal 3. A City Pass Small (zones 1–4, including the airport) costs DKK 100 for 24 hours of unlimited travel. Tickets cannot be bought on board, and inspectors check them.
The road route from Kastrup across Amager into the inner city is about 9 km and takes about 21 minutes without traffic. The bridges from Amager slow down at rush hours. The medieval core around Strøget is pedestrian, and the inner streets are full of cyclists, so a car stops at the nearest street open to traffic.

Copenhagen is one of the easiest airports in Europe by public transport: for most travellers with a suitcase or two, the metro or the train is the obvious choice. Take the metro for Nyhavn, Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport, the train for Central Station and Vesterbro. A private transfer makes sense for families with car seats, groups of four or more, a lot of luggage, or an address away from a station.
